Eighteenth Amendment is ratified in Washington D.C.

Passed by Congress on December 18, 1917, the amendment prohibits “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors. Congress overrides the veto of President Woodrow Wilson to enact the National Prohibition Act, better known as Volstead Act, which provides for the enforcement the amendment, on October 28, 1919. The law it goes into effect in 1920.*
